After vaccine mandates left us trapped outside of our home in the USA, we made a new one in Mexico.
Now it's time to leave. This is why...
Why am I leaving Mexico? Mexico. Specifically the part of it I found myself in is a paradise. Endless blue skies. Ocean just a short walk from the jungle compound I've found myself in. Pool, studio, incredibly cheap cinema. Who would give up such luxury?
I've loved living here. I've been blessed to meet some wonderful people here. I've grown as a person here. I finally integrated exercise, weight lifting, all these things I've been putting off for so long. I've finally got round to it here. I've got in the best shape of my life here. I'm grateful for everything I found here.
But I don't belong here. I never thought I belonged anywhere, I was, to be honest. My parents moved to Wales from England when I was about two years old and I was not Welsh. I left home just before I turned 16 and I went back to the Midlands where I was born. But having been raised in Wales, I was not one of them. I had the wrong accent. I was not one of them. Later, I moved to London with my sort of Northern Welsh hybrid accent. I wasn't a Londoner either.
I first flew out to the USA in 2004 and I immediately felt at home. I felt like I was amongst my people. Have you ever heard of Tall poppy syndrome? It's the idea that if someone starts to step above where they're supposed to be, they get cut down. The UK has a vigilantly enforced class system. People born at the level I was are supposed to stay right down there. And if they ever dare try to poke their head above that arbitrary line, they'll get it chopped off.
In the UK I found if you've got some big, crazy idea and you tell people about it, they'll tell you all the reasons why it's a stupid idea and it could never work. In the USA I found if I told somebody that same idea, they'd be excited. They'd have ideas as to how it could work.
What I realized was in the UK there's a monarchy and people know on a subconscious level that there's a level above which they will never reach. In the USA they tell you that anybody can be president. In the UK, life is capped at birth. In the USA, hypothetically, a single life has limitless potential. It doesn't matter how true any of that really is. What you believe subconsciously becomes real. And I knew that that's where I needed to be. I knew that in the future when I had my son, that's where he needed to be. That's what I wanted for him. That's the culture I wanted him to be around. That's the potential I wanted him to have for himself.
Americans, I realized, were my people. The USA was funded by people who, like me, left the UK following their dreams, willing to sacrifice, willing to suffer to escape tyranny and forge a new destiny for their bloodline.
My son spent the first major part of his life in the USA and the next here in Mexico. And it's been a beautiful chapter. But now as he moves into the teen chapter of his life, he needs to be around people who share his culture and language.
And it's time for Meaningwave to finally fulfill its early promise. It's time for live shows. It's time for collaborations. Podcasts. It's time for me to be able to finally accept those offers to go on TV shows. It is time to take it to the next level.
If you get value from what we're doing, consider backing the backing the WAVERIDER today because you wanna help get the Dons back to the USA and make EPIC NEW MIXTAPE!
