Every year since the birth of pop music thereβs been a song of the summer, and it's been pretty easily traceable.
This year, not so much.
Maybe itβs my own bubble, or maybe its all our bubbles, but consensus on a single unifying anthem with which to remember the summer fo 2020 seems to be harder to come by this year than ever before. This was the first time in my lifetime a whole Summer went by without clubs to go to. Without festivals. All the usual gathering places where these things are decided erased from the world.
With radio already dead, Soundcloud plunging into irrelevance, cultural commentators and historians almost wholly consumed with the daily horrowshow of political churn and cultural warfare, artists unable, unwilling or just plaint too scared to honestly score the moment, and playlist curators at a loss as to how to judge to mood of a people torn from their preciously predictably programmable structures and habit loops - where does all this leave pop music?
And WHAT WAS THE SONG OF THE SUMMER, 2020?
