And I usually don't speak politically 'cause I think the political framing is often a deep misrepresentation of the issue
At least the way in which political discourse has been sort of been ossified, sort of been ossified in ways make choice, no longer really relevant
And you know Christianity stole the culture away from the elites, it's time
Now new elites form, they always will but the culture changed and it changed in an important way and that's what I'm trying to do right now

And the whole point about the metaphor is we can't, we can't win by playing the game (Their game)
That's right
My way of trying to understand what it is to not play their game and to shift over to, into a totally different game
To shift the culture, it's to steal the culture
The only thing I could get from history that's been able to do that are religion
But for reasons I've articulated, I don't want
And it’s not personally, I mean in terms of the functionality, I don't think the standard model, the axial age model of religion is going to do what we need in order to steal the culture as deeply as we need to steal it

Before I started traveling I thought that the human race as a whole will turn on itself at any moment, you know, venal, petty, cruel, arbitrarian
And it's true that all of those things exist in this world, but
I meet mostly pretty nice people
Doing the best they can, often under very, very difficult conditions
I met a lot of very nice people who've done very, very bad things that conflict with my deeply-held conceptions of justice and sexual equality or acceptable practice or religious views
There are a lot of gray areas in travel
But I think that on balance the world is filled with people doing the best they can, you know?

I've been fired many times during my cooking career

You know what's funny?
I never used to think about the fact about loving myself
I just wasn't that guy

Came when I hit rock bottom

The substance of the tree is carbon, where did that come from?
It comes from the air
It's carbon dioxide from the air
People look at trees and they think it comes out of the ground
That plants grow out of the ground
But if you ask, where the substance comes from?

The carbon dioxide in the air goes into the tree and it changes it
Kicking out the oxygen
And then pushing the oxygen away from the carbon and leaving the carbon substance with water
Water comes out of the ground
Only it came out of the air, didn't it?
Came down from the sky
So most of it, almost all of the tree is out of the ground
I'm sorry, it's out of the air!
Now, of course I told you the oxygen and carbon stick together very tight
How is it that the tree is so smart to manage to take the carbon dioxide, which is the carbon oxygen nicely combined and undo that so easy?
Ah, life. Life has some mysterious quirks
No, the sun is shining
And it's the sunlight that comes down and locks this oxygen away from the carbon
So it takes sunlight to get the plant to work
And so the sun, all the time, is doing the work of separating the oxygen away from the carbon, the oxygen is some kind of terrible byproduct, which it spits back into the air and leaving the carbon and water and stuff to make the substance of the tree
And then when we take the substance in the tree, and stick it in the fireplace
It is the only oxygen made by these trees
And all the carbon would much prefer to be close together again
And once you've let the heat to get it started, it continues and makes an awful lot of activity while it's going back together again
And all this nice light and everything comes out and everything is being undone, you're going back to carbon and oxygen, back to carbon dioxide
And the light and the heat that's coming out. That's the light and heat of the sun that went in

Um, I was talking about that this weekend, thinking a lot about it
I think the two basic types of music indigenous to this country are
Um, the Black music blues
And the kind of folk music that was brought over from Europe
And I guess they call it country music or the kind of West Virginia high and lonesome sound
Those are the two mainstreams of the root American music
It looks like, uh 10 years ago what they call rock 'n' roll was kind of a blending of those two forms
Uh... I guess what's happening now is rock is kind of dying out
And everyone's going back to their roots again
Some are going back into country and some are going back into basic blues
I guess in four or five years the new generation's music will be, it'll have a synthesis of those two elements and some third thing

I realized this way back
First everybody says, “Oh, ideas are a dime a dozen. Execution is everything.”
And they just assume that at some point they'll be walking around and lightning will strike them and they'll think, “Oh my gosh. People should share cars and I'll make an app in the middle to connect people with cars and I'll call it Uber.”
No, ideas don't really work like that
Nor does execution work the way most people think
People think, I'm gonna take this great idea and now I'm going to do it
The doing it, it can happen in 1,000 different ways
People don't realize there's a whole spectrum of execution ranging from really, really bad so that an idea will fail or really, really good so that even a bad idea might have a chance for success

If you're sick and you lie in bed for two weeks, you might actually need physical therapy to walk again

I'll come up with a topic and I'll try to practice having 10 ideas a day around, each day'll be a different topic
But I'll try to have 10 good ideas around that topic
Now they won't be good ideas because you can't have 3,650 good ideas a year
But I try to make sure they're as good as they possibly could be
I've been doing this every since I wanted to network, and I'm not a very good networker
I wanted to ask my heroes, can I buy you a cup of coffee and pick your brain?
So I wrote to 20 people
They didn't even say no
None of them responded
Why would they respond?
Warren Buffett's not gonna say, hold everything
Clear up my schedule, Gladys
He's never gonna even respond to me
He's gonna think I'm an idiot
So then I started writing down, I started researching everyone's business and I started writing down 10 ideas for Warren Buffett's business
10 ideas for this person's business
10 ideas for this person's business
And then I would send those ideas to the people
And I would say, "Hey, you don't have to respond to this. I don't want anything, but I really admire you and your business, here's 10 things where I think your business could improve."
And then I started getting responses, and it actually changed my life, some of those responses
And so I started doing it every single day
